CPD News: accident update, jewelry theft

By

Another Canton High School student has returned home from the hospital after sustaining serious injuries in a two-car accident on York Street on Friday, March 2. However, one student remains in serious condition at a Boston hospital. The accident injured seven people in all, including six CHS students, all of whom were traveling in one car. Four of the students were released from Norwood Hospital during the weekend of March 2 after being treated for various injuries, and the driver of the second vehicle was released from Good Samaritan Hospital.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation by Canton police and a State Police reconstruction team. Police Lt. Helena Findlen said Tuesday that police are awaiting the State Police report, which may not be ready for several weeks.

Jaws of Life needed to extricate crash victim

Canton firefighters needed the Jaws of Life to extricate an unidentified man from his vehicle following a one-car crash on Saturday afternoon, March 19, at the highway entrance ramp to Rte. 93 South and the Ponkapoag Bridge. The accident victim was transported by ambulance to the Boston Medical Center Trauma Center.

Discovery of costume jewelry leads to arrest

A bag of costume jewelry and assorted items left on Mechanic Street and brought to police led to an investigation, which resulted in police charging a Sandwich woman with larceny and receiving stolen property.

Detective Michael Lank investigated, and the bag of assorted items led him to Hansen and Pembroke police, who reported jewelry thefts. The jewelry was later traced to NCT Gold Buyers on Washington Street, where the stolen jewelry was sold for cash. On March 5, Canton police charged Catherine McAlpine, 21, of Sandwich, with receiving stolen property and larceny over $250.

In a related matter, Police Chief Ken Berkowitz has filed an article for town meeting that would extend the waiting period for the melting of gold jewelry to 21 days and also require submission of a mandatory report of sale from the gold buyers to the police department so that police can check to see if the jewelry was taken from previous thefts.
