Canton football to host ‘Pub Night’ March 23
By Mike BergerThe Friends of Canton Football will hold their annual “Pub Night” on Friday, March 23, at 7 p.m. at the Canton Town Club.
This is the association’s largest fundraiser, with proceeds going to support the newly revived middle school football program. The night will focus on the CHS football teams from 1984-1993 as well as the 25th anniversary of the 1987 Super Bowl team. Former head coach Frank Tricomi will attend along with his former assistant coaches and many former players of that era.
The Friends will also honor Dave Foley with the William “Hubba” Young Award for his work on reviving the Canton Pop Warner program. Young, who passed away, graduated from CHS in 1981 and was a member of that year’s undefeated football team. He played on the offensive and defensive lines and was a “tremendous athlete,” Bohane said. Young was chosen to play in the Shriner’s Game, which selects the best high school football players at their positions.
Young later returned to coach under former head coaches Paul Therrien and Tricomi. “[Young] put CHS at the focal point of his life,” said Bohane.
Foley, who now runs Foley’s Backstreet Grille in Stoughton, previously served as president of Pop Warner and as a coach for several teams during the 1990s. “At that period of time, Dave righted the ship and put new energy in the program,” said Bohane.
Several of Foley’s children also played in the program. Foley also coached at CHS, and his son Kevin, a former CHS player and now a Canton police officer, is still an assistant coach.
The upcoming Pub Night will include food, raffles, music, and DVD highlights. Tickets are $25 at the door and $35 for a couple.
