It’s time to do the ‘right thing’ with Historical Way
By Canton CitizenDear Editor:
It is amazing how things can fly under the radar, hidden away in the archives until a question is asked and a discovery is made. Most residents are completely unaware until it happens to them, but when we do, shouldn’t we do the right thing and correct it?
Historical Way was developed in the 1960s. When all of us bought our homes, we thought it was like any other Canton street. Unbelievably, it is not. It is a private road and not a town-accepted street. In November of 1966 it was deemed acceptable to the Public Works Department, and the bond was released to the developer. At that point the paperwork should have been processed, taken before town meeting, and recorded at the Registry of Deeds. However, the ball was dropped! The paperwork was never completed, and the street was never brought before town meeting for acceptance.
Incredibly, in March 1980, it was not completed again! Article 24 was put forth by the town for taking by eminent domain a utility easement for sewer construction that cut through Historical Way to tie town sewage to Dedham Street. Yet Historical Way itself was not put forth for acceptance by town meeting.
How do these things happen — who knows? However, the current residents of Historical Way are trying to finish the process that should have been completed back in 1966. We have petitioned for acceptance by town meeting through Article 39, and we ask for your support.
The residents of Historical Way have spent a substantial amount of time and money for newly updated plans requested by the engineering department for recording at the Registry of Deeds. We are simply trying to do what should have been done decades ago. We ask you and all the voters of Canton to help us rectify this by voting with the residents of Historical Way to gain street acceptance on April 30.
Sincerely,
Marty Devane
