Massachusetts TB Hero

By

Canton resident Nancy O’Neil, LPN, was recognized as the commonwealth’s TB Hero at the 2012 “World No TB Day” event held at the Massachusetts State House on March 27.

The Medical Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Tuberculosis (MACET), a group of physicians and other TB experts focused on Massachusetts, held the event attended by over 100 state legislators, Department of Public Health officials, physicians, nurses, and community members.

O’Neil is the TB coordinator for the VA Boston Healthcare System, which has three sites: Brockton, Jamaica Plain, and West Roxbury. Each year, one award is given to someone who makes extraordinary contributions to protect Massachusetts communities from the contagious and potentially deadly threat of tuberculosis.

“[O’Neil] tirelessly serves the 5,000 employees who work for the system to ensure their safety from tuberculosis, and therefore, the safety of their communities from tuberculosis,” said state Representative Michael Brady as he presented her award and a special state citation.

State Senator Brian Joyce and state Representative William Galvin also gave special state citations.
