Both outdoor track teams fall to Sharon
By Mike BergerThe CHS boys’ and girls’ outdoor track teams opened the spring season last week with a double loss to Sharon, with the boys falling 92-44 and the girls losing 96-40.
Senior captain Cam Huber led the boys’ team with three first-place finishes in the 400 intermediate hurdles (61.4 sec), 400 meters (51.6 sec), and high jump (5’6”). His time in the 400 hurdles has already qualified him for the state meet.
The Bulldogs struggled in two relays and did not score any points in the 110 high hurdles, two-mile run, long jump, and triple jump.
Peter Sheehan and Julian Malbranche both placed in the top three in two different field events.
Sheehan won the discus at 105 feet, nine inches, and then placed second in the shot put at 35 feet, 11 inches. Malbranche won the javelin at 141 feet, five inches, and scored a third in the discus at 93 feet, nine inches.
According to boys’ head coach Brian Conroy, freshman Jim Bourikas earned his first varsity point with a third-place finish in the 200 meters (26.2 sec).
Other Canton scorers were Derek Seto, first, 100 meters, 11.6 sec; Jake Fruci, second, mile, 4:51.5; Craig Mills, second, 800 meters, 2:09; and Evan Feldman, second, 200 meters, 25.2 seconds.
Besides Huber, other captains this season are Seto, Sheehan, and Fruci.
In the girls’ meet, senior Vicky Tondre and junior Mellyn Costello were the major point scorers as Tondre won three events and placed in another and Costello won the 110 high hurdles and placed second in the long jump. Also scoring in multiple events was sophomore Rachel Campagna, who placed second in the 200 meters (28.3 sec) and third in both the long jump (14’2”) and triple jump (29’11”).
The girls swept the top three spots in the long jump but failed to score a point in the 400 intermediate hurdles, mile, 800, 4×400 relay, discus, and javelin.
Tondre won the 100-meter dash at 12.9 seconds, the 200 meters at 27.1 seconds, and the long jump at 16 feet, three inches. She also finished third in the shot put at 23 feet. Other Canton scorers included Sarojini Schutt, third, 100 meters, 14.5 sec; Kelsey Sayers, third, 400 meters, 70.9 sec; Courtney Loughnane, third, two mile, 13:32.2; and Gabby Kenefick, second, high jump, four feet, 10 inches.
Both teams were due to compete against Oliver Ames in an away meet on April 10.
