The Canton High varsity baseball team improved to 3-2 with two league wins last week, and the schedule really picks up with five games in the next week.

Coming off a disappointing 10-2 loss to Dover Sherborn on the road — one in which head coach Junior Medina said the defense “didn’t come to play” — the coach began working with the team on “learning how to compete and gain respect from your opponents.” Even after a loss, he said, “if you show you want to compete, teams will respect you.”

Medina was so upset after the Dover Sherborn game that he challenged his players to compete against each other. “If players don’t want to compete against each other, how will they compete versus other opponents?” he said. “I guess it helped out with the last two wins.”

Canton came back after the 10-2 loss with a 4-3, extra-inning win over Foxboro. Starting pitcher Jimmy Fitzgerald gave up only one hit over six innings while striking out 12 batters. All three Foxboro runs were unearned. Sam Larson pitched four innings in relief, striking out six while allowing only two hits.

The Bulldogs had several clutch hits in the win, including a hit by Rudy in the third inning that scored two runs, another one by Chris Cammarata that tied the game, and a sacrifice fly by Matt Potts to bring in Steve Mullaney with the winning run.

The Bulldogs came out swinging the following day against Mansfield, pounding out 14 hits in a 17-9 win over the Hornets. Cammarata had three hits to lead the attack. Medina also praised the performances of freshman Liam Murphy and junior Ian Flavin.

The Bulldogs’ offensive leaders are Potts and Rudy with batting averages of .473 and .470, respectively, to go with six RBIs apiece. Cammarata is third on the team at .352, followed by Drew Blake at .333.

Canton was due to play at Dedham on Tuesday and at North Attleboro on Wednesday, and will host Dover Sherborn on Friday at noon. Next week the team will host King Philip on April 23 and Oliver Ames on April 25, with both games starting at 3:30 p.m.
