Boys’ tennis has impressive showing with 2 big wins
By Holly EricksonThe Canton High boys’ tennis team had a strong second week of play with wins against both Foxboro and Mansfield — two teams that have given the Bulldogs trouble in the past — as the squad improved its record to 3-1.
Last Tuesday’s match on the road against Foxboro resulted in a 3-2 win for the Bulldogs. At first singles, senior Mitch Kayserman cruised past his competitor 6-3, 6-3. Sophomore Sam Riemer, in the second singles position, also won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. In doubles play, seniors Logan Cerruti and Alex Geyyer “continued to roll, with a great win, 6-3, 6-4,” according to head coach Leo Nelson.
Wednesday’s match at home against Mansfield was another 3-2 win for the Bulldogs. Doubles play continues its positive roll, with both first and second doubles bringing home a victory. Cerruti and Geyyer came up strong with a 6-4, 6-4 win, while seniors Matt and Alex Garcia cruised in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
But it was Kayserman who had the match of the day. Up against Mansfield’s Mike Szrom, Kayserman had “one of his best wins to date,” explained Nelson. The match went into the third set, which is when “[Kayserman] found his rhythm and confidence to pull out a very cool and collected win.” The final score of the match was 6-4, 7-6, (7-4).
The Bulldogs were scheduled to travel to Dedham on Tuesday and North Attleboro on Wednesday, both with noon starts.
