Back-to-back homers propel baseball team over Dedham
By Mike BergerThe Canton High varsity baseball team got off to a strong start over April vacation week, knocking off Dedham in dramatic fashion to push its season-high winning streak to three games. But the streak didn’t last as the Bulldogs lost to its next two opponents, North Attleboro and Dover-Sherborn, to fall to 4-4 overall.
By far the highlight of the week was the team’s 4-3, come-from-behind win over Dedham, which had previously beaten Canton 12-7 on April 5.
Dedham took the early lead, scoring two in the bottom of the first inning to go up 2-0, but Canton came back with a rally ignited by Matt Potts, who singled, stole second, advanced to third on a ground ball, and came home on a passed ball to make it a one-run game.
Trailing 3-1 going into the seventh inning, Drew Blake came up with a single and Potts smacked a homerun to tie the game. Rudy then hit another homerun to give the Bulldogs the lead, enough for pitcher Sam Larson to get his second win of the season.
Canton did not have as much luck the next day as the team fell to NA 6-3 on the road. However, head coach Junior Medina came away impressed with the pitching performance of freshman Liam Murphy, who threw a complete game. Errors in the first two innings led to four unearned runs. Chris Cammarata had three hits on the day to lead the Canton offense.
The Bulldogs suffered their second loss of the week two days later against Dover-Sherborn 8-1. Starting pitcher Jimmy Fitzgerald pitched five complete innings in the loss. D-S had also won the previous meeting between the two teams — a 10-2 decision on April 7.
The Bulldogs were due to host King Philip on April 23 and Oliver Ames on April 25, then travel to Stoughton on Friday, April 27. Next week they will host Attleboro on April 30 and travel to Franklin on May 2.
