Baseball team tops Bedford to end losing streak

The fortunes of the CHS baseball team picked up last week as the Bulldogs played some good baseball, losing 1-0 to Sharon before coming back to beat Bedford 5-1 at home on Friday. The win ended an eight-game losing streak.

Now 5-10, the Bulldogs could still make the playoffs if they can beat Bedford again this week and then win a makeup game against Foxboro.

The Bulldogs received two fine pitching performances last week from junior Jimmy Fitzgerald and sophomore Sam Larson. Fitzgerald lost a heartbreaker to Sharon in a game that lasted a very quick 80 minutes. A base hit that went through the infield in the seventh inning led to the Eagles’ only run. He allowed only three hits in the game, but Canton could only muster two.

“Jimmy made one mistake, and it unfortunately scored the winning run,” said head coach Junior Medina. “But it was an outstanding pitching performance for him.”

In the win over Bedford, Larson pitched five innings of shutout ball, limiting Bedford to a few hits while striking out seven. Freshman Liam Murphy pitched two innings and gave up one run. Medina said he has been very impressed with Murphy, who has pitched two complete games as a starter for the Bulldogs. Medina is quite excited that next season he will have three promising pitchers returning in Fitzgerald, Larson, and Murphy.

Offensively, the Bulldogs turned in a solid performance behind Justin Rudy, who delivered a two-run double, Chris Cammarata, who produced a two-run single, and Kyle Delsignore, who knocked in the team’s other run with a single.

In addition to games this week against Bedford and Foxboro, the Bulldogs were due to travel to Oliver Ames on Wednesday, May 16, and are excited to host their first night game on Monday, May 21, at 7 p.m. against Stoughton. The game will be played under the lights at Ruane Field, which is located at the Kennedy School. Prior to the game, the team will honor its three seniors: Cammarata, Andrew Vinciguerra, and Matt Potts.
