A star in the making
By Holly EricksonUpdate: After reaching the final eight of the south sectional girls’ tennis individual tournament, sophomore Erika Nannery continued on to the final weekend of play, where she won her first match 6-3, 6-2 before falling to Cohasset’s Emma Davis, who, just the week before, had taken her sister Micaela out of contention. Congratulations to both Nannery sisters for their outstanding play at the tournament and throughout the season.

Sophomore tennis standout Erika Nannery is headed to the final round of the MIAA south sectional individual tournament after winning all four of her opening round matches last weekend at Norwell High School. Nannery, who was seeded sixth heading into the tournament, is one of eight singles players who will compete for the title this Saturday and Sunday, May 19-20, at Old Rochester Regional High School.
Erika’s older sister Micaela also represented CHS at the tournament, going undefeated until the third round, where she fell to nationally ranked Cohasset player Emma Davis.
Canton head coach Bill Kates offered nothing but praise for both players, while noting that Micaela, who was seeded 14th, played arguably the “best player of the tournament” in Davis.
As for Erika, this will be her second straight appearance in the “elite eight” of the south sectional tourney. Last season, as a freshman, she made it all the way to the semifinals before being eliminated by Nauset’s Tori Paolino.
