Softball team shows improvement in loss to Sharon
By Jay TurnerWith bad weather twice forcing the cancellation of its game against Foxboro, the Canton High softball team had only one chance last week to end its six-game losing streak, and the Bulldogs came up just short, losing 4-3 at home against Sharon to fall to 3-10 overall.
While still unable to get over the hump, the girls did show marked improvement against a team that had beaten them 6-1 in the season opener. And as head coach Ed Amico duly noted, “playing better in May than in March is always a priority,” especially with the Division 2 playoffs coming up in just two weeks.
According to Amico, the squad that played the Eagles last Monday was a “totally different Canton team” than the one that traveled to Sharon on April 3.
For one, the girls dramatically cut down on their defensive mistakes, committing just two errors as opposed to six in the opener. Unfortunately, those two errors still proved costly as they led to three of Sharon’s four runs in the game.
On the other hand, the Bulldog bats looked impressive, with Canton outhitting the visitors 11-9 behind multiple-hit performances from Becky Lazaro, Julia Murphy, and Sam Sullivan. The only issue in this area was the lack of clutch hits, as the Bulldogs stranded 10 runners in the game, including two in the sixth and the bases loaded in the seventh.
Canton is now heading into the home stretch of the season, and with five games remaining against familiar opponents, Amico is hoping that the team can play its own style and at a high level for all seven innings.
The Bulldogs had three games this week, beginning with “senior day” on Monday versus Boston Latin Academy. The girls were also due to play a makeup game Tuesday at Foxboro and then host Oliver Ames on Wednesday.
