Boys’ tennis team nabs 2 more wins
By Holly EricksonThe Canton High boys’ tennis team wrapped up another solid regular season campaign with victories last week against Stoughton and North Attleboro and a loss to Oliver Ames.
Starting off the week, the boys hosted Stoughton and defeated the Black Knights 5-0. The highlight of the day came courtesy of junior Andrew Sulkala. Winning in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, Sulkala “had another solid match, showing his patience and smooth strokes,” said head coach Leo Nelson.
Two days later, the squad hosted the Red Rocketeers — and the stakes were high. Tied for second place in the Hockomock League and having previously lost to NA earlier in the season, the boys came ready to play “with guns blazing and running on all cylinders,” according to Nelson.
At first singles, sophomore Sam Riemer’s match brought the only loss of the day, but it came in a back-and-forth battle against a very strong number one. Falling 6-2 in the first set, Riemer battled back for a 6-2 win in the second set; but ultimately fell 6-2 in the third. Nelson praised Riemer’s positive attitude and commitment to the squad, noting that “Sam has talked about stepping up his level of play to lead the team next year and keep the Bulldogs as a constant threat in the Hockomock.”
Meanwhile, the top two doubles teams came up big for Canton, including senior Alex Garcia and junior Sam Solomon, who beat their opponents 6-4, 7-6.
Nelson had lots of positive things to say about Solomon’s role and future on the team. “Sam came off the bench and filled in when needed, stepping up to the challenge and putting away a very consistent player,” Nelson said. “He has been making huge gains and will be a major player for the team next year.”
In other action, the senior duo of Logan Cerruti and Alex Geyyer once again brought home a victory. Taking their opposition to the third set, “they showed North Attleboro who brought their A-game that day with a score of 7-6, 4-6, 6-2,” said Nelson.
Following these two commanding wins, however, things fell apart for the Bulldogs at Oliver Ames, as they lost 5-0 in the final regular season match of the year.
Now 10-6, the squad will look to rebound in the Division 3 south sectional tournament, which gets underway this week.
