Boys’ tennis bows out in 2nd round of D3 tourney
By Holly EricksonThe last team standing for CHS spring sports, the boys’ tennis team saw its season come to an end last Tuesday against Westport. Playing in the quarterfinals of the Division 3 south sectional tournament, the 10th seeded Bulldogs fell 3-2 to the second seeded and heavily favored Wildcats, who were undefeated going into the match at 17-0.
The two wins for Canton came from the squad’s senior players. Mitch Kayserman played a great match against a very strong, experienced player and cruised to a 6-2, 6-4 win. Brothers Matt and Alex Garcia also beat out strong competition and pulled off a solid win in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
Coach Leo Nelson praised his team for a great season and now looks ahead to next year. “I am extremely proud of all of my players and couldn’t be more pleased by our outcome this year,” he said. “We are losing a lot of seniors, so I’m looking for the next group of players to step up and fill the gaps that will be there next year.”
