MAC: Canton Company on the Move

Canton biotech firm Organogenesis will be moving into a new research lab and headquarters at 150 Dan Road. Construction is also underway at 275 Dan Road to expand its manufacturing space to meet the increasing demands of its top product, the Apligraf skin graft. The $65 million project is expected to be completed in 2013. The company had 500 employees at the end of 2011 with more than 250 working in Canton. Its 2010 revenues exceeded $100 million.

Canton-based Dunkin’ Donuts said a group led by Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and former Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman plans to open at least 50 Dunkin’ Donuts shops throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth region over the next five years.

There are 2,850 planned residential units to be built on the property formerly known as the South Weymouth Naval Air Station, now called Southfield. Developers currently have permits to construct up to 500 units of housing. Whitman Homes Company of Canton is building 13 townhouses and 11 single-family homes on the property. The South Weymouth Naval Air Station opened in 1942, serving as a base for blimps that patrolled the Atlantic shores during World War II. It was later used as an air station until it closed in 1997.

More than half of Facebook’s 900 million users now access its mobile site. It seems more people use Facebook on mobile phones than on personal computers. That trend is having a negative financial effect on Facebook and is the reason the initial public offering has not done as well as it was expected to do. Facebook acknowledged that it has limited ads on its mobile site.

The Steward Health Care System is getting bigger. It recently acquired the New England Sinai Hospital in Stoughton. The Boston-based Steward said it would invest nearly $40 million in the rehab hospital.

The Life is good Company will host its third annual music festival on September 22 and 23 at the Meditech campus at Prowse Farm on Blue Hill River Road in Canton.

Canton DJ Gary Titus recently sent in his request for an invitation to try out for the PA announcer’s job at Fenway Park. MAC knows that Gary has the voice for the job to follow in the footsteps of the late Carl Beane, who announced the Red Sox games for the past 10 years, and Gary’s good friend Sherm Feller, who started at Fenway Park as the PA in 1967 and called Boston games for almost 30 years.

The Veterans’ Coffee Hour on June 7 at the Canton Town Club honored the service of Edward Estey, who served in the European campaign during World War II, and Canton Housing Authority member Martin Dorian, a machinist’s mate third class in the U.S. Navy who participated in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre during World War II.

The final day of class for Canton schools this year is Tuesday, June 19.

The yellow pine pollen is driving MAC crazy. It seems that every day it coats not only his car, but also the driveway, deck, small bushes, and flowers. They say it’s a byproduct of this past warm winter and dry spring. Car wash owners must be very busy this time of year.

Speaking about the weather, the hurricane season in the Atlantic Ocean begins June 1 and runs through November 30, according to the National Weather Service.

Here’s some good news from the Bad News Department: Oil prices are falling (good news) as the unemployment rate in the U.S. rose from 8.1 percent to 8.2 percent (bad news). MAC recently paid $3.35 a gallon for oil and experts predict it could fall below $3 this month.

Maurice Hurst, a resident of Canton and a junior at Xaverian Brothers High School, has verbally committed to play football for the University of Michigan. Hurst, at 6’2”, 270 pounds, is expected to play defensive tackle for the Wolverines.

Here we go again with the government getting involved. Governor Bloomberg of New York, in an effort to combat rising obesity, plans to propose a ban on the sale of sodas and other sugary drinks larger than 16 fluid ounces. It would be the first in the nation and would take effect early next year.

The Canton Senior Olympics will take place on Friday, June 22, and Saturday, June 23, at the Massachusetts Hospital School. It will include a celebrity volleyball game, swimming events, horseshoes, track, a softball throw, an 80-yard closest-to-the pin, and 15 basketball free throws. Age divisions include 55-60, 61-65, 66-70, 71-79, and 80+. For further information, call the Canton Senior Center at 781-828-1323.
