Police action thwarts possible burglary attempt

A police officer who noticed a man being dropped off at the closed Dunkin Donuts on Neponset Street near I-95 around 1 a.m. on Sunday, June 17, found a man hiding behind the bushes.

Officers Steve Saraf and Donald Stapleton investigated and found a man with a pair of gloves and a tire iron in his possession. Police arrested Michael McGee, 42, of Norwood, and charged him with possession of a burglarious instrument. Police Lt. Helena Findlen said the officers’ investigation may have stopped an attempted break-in, and police are now looking to see if the suspect may have attempted other similar burglaries.

Firefighters, EMTs free man with hand caught under a truck

A crew of 10 firefighters and EMTs rescued an unidentified man at 246 Neponset Street after his hand became trapped under a pickup truck on Monday, June 11, around 3:40 p.m. Fire Lt. Brian Marshall said the man was working on his truck and the jack slipped. Firefighters used an air bag and compressed air to jack up the truck and free his hand. He was transported to Norwood Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Assorted notes from the June 12 Board of Selectmen’s meeting

* Selectmen signed a letter of achievement for retiring Canton High School teachers Richard Staiti for his 31 years of service and Donna Guidici for her 36 years of service.

* Karen Zukauskas has been appointed as director of assessing effective July 1.

* Jeremy Comeau has resigned as a member of the Canton Youth Commission.

* Charles McCarthy Jr. has resigned as a skilled laborer and truck driver with the Water Department.

* Town Administrator Bill Friel reported that the town could receive a grant of up to $2,000 to go toward the purchase of recycling bins at schools and playing fields.

* The Canton Public Library received a $5,000 donation from the estate of Ida Gladstone, and the Fire Department received a $5,000 donation from Paul Clark of Phoenix Electric.

* Selectmen will next meet on Tuesday, June 26, at 7 p.m. and will meet twice a month over the next three months.
