4th Annual Unity Day
By Canton CitizenOn Friday, June 8, the Canton Public Schools’ wellness department hosted the fourth annual “Unity Day” Fitness Festival for fifth graders at the Galvin Middle School, and according to wellness coordinator Katey Swanson, the event was once again a big success.
Conceived in 2009 by former wellness coordinator Peter Boucher as a fun way for fifth graders from all three schools to get to know one another, the celebration featured a variety of games and activities, including relay races, a hockey shoot-out, capture the flag, and “Slippery Eel,” among others. Assisting the wellness staff and fifth-grade teachers were dozens of student-leaders from the middle and high schools, as well as Nurse Leader Janet Donnelly and the custodial and cafeteria staffs. Students were also given a guided tour of their soon-to-be new school and were treated to a pizza lunch courtesy of the various school CAPTs.
Students and staff received another treat earlier in the day, when GMS eighth grader Ben Berkowitz, son of Canton Police Chief Ken Berkowitz, performed a flawless rendition of the National Anthem on his electric guitar.
