Canton teachers STEAMing up good ideas for ed.
By GuestThe final bell for the school year has been delayed for a group of Canton teachers. This past week they attended a three-day STEAM workshop to help prepare Canton students for future employment. STEAM (formerly STEM) is an acronym for science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. It is these fields that are projected to have the greatest growth and impact in the region’s workforce in the years ahead.
Steve Kramer of First Robotics presented one of the many workshop segments. In addition to demonstrating low-cost Lego projects, he also brought along a Nao robot named Becky. This humanoid robot allows kids to connect theory with practice. Students are able to discover a wide range of robotics-related fields, such as computer science, engineering, and mathematics.
To accomplish the STEAM committee’s ambitious five-year plan that goes beyond robotics, the committee will need the financial and intellectual support of the greater Canton community. It is seeking speakers, resources, and finances to help prepare Canton’s students for 21st century learning.
If you would like to get involved with STEAM in the Canton Public Schools by donating money, materials, speakers, or resources, please contact Jen Henderson, director of curriculum and instruction, at 781-821-5060 ext. 1126 or hendersonj@cantonma.org.
