Legion Post 24 team ends season on high note

The Canton American Legion Post 24 baseball team ended its season on a high note last week, beating rival Norwood 3-2 and Westwood 8-4 to finish 10-12 overall, good for sixth place in the District 6 West Division.

Although Canton did not make the playoffs, it did beat the league’s top two teams — Norwood (18-4) and Walpole (17-4-1) — for the first time in many years and almost beat Norwood twice, failing to hold onto a 5-1 lead in the last half inning.

Canton came out determined to beat Norwood at home and started its best pitcher, Dave Roberto. After six innings of scoreless baseball, Canton pulled ahead 3-0 after a sacrifice fly by Drew Blake and a two-run double by Nate Pederson. Kevin O’Brien, Matt Potts, and Brennan Sullivan all had hits in the inning, while Justin Rudy drew a key walk.

Refusing to quit, Norwood rallied for two runs before Roberto shut the door with a strikeout to end the game. Roberto pitched a complete game, allowing seven hits and striking out five. He ended up with a final record of 4-4 with an earned run average of 1.81.

Head coach Al Jackson decided to play everyone in the final game against Westwood, and Canton responded with 13 hits. Blake, Dan Friedman, Roberto, Sullivan (2), and Jimmy Fitzgerald all drove in runs, and Pedersen hit a long triple.

Starter Sam Larson threw five innings and was relieved by Liam Murphy, Kyle Delsignore, and Fitzgerald, with Fitzgerald getting the win.

The team batted .247 on the season, with Blake, Jake Fishman, and Sullivan all hovering around .300.
