Canton resident wins 2 gold medals at National Taekwondo Championship
By Canton CitizenThirteen-year-old Elizabeth Wu of Canton is now a national champion after winning two gold medals at the American Taekwondo United (ATU) National Championships in Atlanta, Georgia.
A former competitive swimmer who also excels in the classroom, Wu claimed first place in both form and sparring in the 12-13 division. Her younger brother Edward also competed at the event, as did fellow Canton resident Zachary Lum, who took home a silver medal in sparring in the 10-11 division.
All three competitors train at Lee’s Taekwondo College in Stoughton and Westwood under Master Hakjae Lee, and between them they have won several tournaments throughout New England.
“I love training and learning great Taekwondo skills and the way of life,” said Wu of her newfound passion.
Owner of multiple regional and state titles and now a national championship, Wu hopes to one day compete in the Olympics. She, her brother, and Lum are all hoping to qualify for the Junior Olympics next year, with an eye toward the International Junior Taekwondo Championships within the next two years.
