Sherwood Coolidge, Rosina
By Canton CitizenRosina Sherwood Coolidge, of Canton, died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Sunday, July 29, 2012.
She was born in El Paso, Texas on January 11, 1924, when her father was stationed in the U.S. Cavalry. She was a daughter of the late Elsie Burr Sherwood and Col. Philip H. Sherwood; wife of the late John T. Coolidge and mother of the late Philip S. Coolidge. She is survived by her daughters: Mae Ling Coolidge Doherty and her husband, Daniel B. Doherty, of Arlington; and June Coolidge Scott and her husband, Randy Scott, of Canton. She has four grandchildren: Hannah, Molly, Austin and Isabella; 14 nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. She was the niece of the late Robert E. Sherwood, Pulitzer prize-winning author and playwright.
She was a graduate of St. Timothy’s School in Baltimore, MD, and studied painting at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School. Her artistic gifts live on after her in the form of her splendid garden and her captivating paintings. She traveled extensively, and she lived in Florence, Italy, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, and Stockbridge, MA during her husband’s artist residencies.
She was a volunteer reading teacher for children in the Boston and Canton public schools for over 20 years. Rosina was beloved by all who knew her, especially her extended family, for her unending generosity and warmth. Though her life brought her face to face with considerable tragedy, her love and wisdom and sense of humor showed all of us the best of the human spirit.
A memorial service will be held in the First Parish Church (Unitarian), 535 Canton Ave., Milton, on Saturday, October 13, at 11 a.m. Donations may be made to the church. Arrangements by the Dolan-Chapman Funeral Home of Milton.
