Bulldogs come back to outlast Quincy on the road

By

Down 12-7 late in the third quarter, the Canton High football team stormed back to score the next 14 points and outplayed the Quincy Presidents on their home field to win 21-12. The Bulldogs are 1-0 and will host 2-0 Abington at CHS tomorrow night at 6 p.m.

Running back Dexter Green scored all of Canton’s 21 points, including an extra point, and recorded a sack and five tackles playing cornerback on defense. He finished the game with 160 yards on 13 carries, including a 52-yard touchdown run on a left sweep on the game’s first play.

While Green’s play was exemplary, he had a lot of help from his teammates, including Shane Nordgren, who tallied 71 yards on 12 carries; Elias Camacho, who made some key catches and rushed for 29 yards; and quarterback Ian Flavin, who directed Canton’s offense, rushed for 29 yards, and made several plays at cornerback late in the game.

Defensively, Conor O’Brien led the way with six tackles at linebacker, junior Joe McCabe played well with five tackles, and safety Brian Hagen had a key interception to set up the go-ahead touchdown. Frankie Powers had four tackles and snuffed a two-point conversion after Quincy’s first touchdown.

“I love the character on this team,” said head coach Dave Bohane. “They are excited to play football and are learning to overcome adversity. Defensively, we are getting better. Our younger players stepped up and are helping us. Offensively, we got it going in the second half.”

The Canton offensive line played well down the stretch, setting up the runs for Green. They wore down the Quincy defense, controlling the clock late in the game. Linemen included Peter Sheehan, Austin Hurley, O’Brien, James Bourikas, Omar Parkman, and Tommy Glynn.

The turning point in the game came late in the third quarter when the snap from center sailed over the Quincy punter’s head and Canton recovered at the Quincy 33-yard line.

Nine plays later on a fourth and one at the one, Green dove over tackle for the touchdown and then converted a two-point rushing sweep to give Canton a 15-12 lead with 9:21 left in the game.

Two series later, after a sack on quarterback James Lam by a combination of Parkman, Sir D’Wayne Reid, and McCabe, Hagen intercepted a pass and brought it back to the Canton 35-yard line with about four minutes left in the game.

Flavin hit Camacho for a key first down on a pass at midfield, and Green swept wide for a 25-yard gain. Runs by Nordgren and Camacho advanced the ball to the five-yard line, and three plays later, Green sealed the win with his third touchdown of the game.

“Canton played very hard and they are coached up well,” said Quincy head coach Bill Reardon. “They stood toe to toe with us, and in the end they made a few more plays.”
