Abington’s late surge hands Bulldogs 1st lost
By Mike BergerIn a very competitive football game that came down to a few key plays in the fourth quarter, the Abington Green Wave wore down the CHS defense en route to a 29-15 victory at CHS Friday night.
The Bulldogs are now 1-1, while Abington remains undefeated at 3-0. Canton now prepares to take on Attleboro on the road this Friday, September 28, at 7 p.m.
Trailing 21-15 with 4:34 left in the game, the Bulldogs could not muster a rally as quarterback Ian Flavin was sacked on a crucial fourth-down play. Abington took over at the eight-yard line and scored two plays later, sealing the win with a successful two-point conversion.
The game seesawed in the opening half, with the Bulldogs jumping out to a 7-0 lead as Flavin ran a 20-yard sweep and Dexter Green added an extra point with 7:22 left in the first quarter.
The Green Wave then answered with a 53-yard touchdown run by Matt Kilmain. To their credit, the Bulldogs answered right back, driving down to the Abington 26-yard line behind runs by Green, Shane Nordgren, and Flavin.
A Canton holding penalty set the Bulldogs back 10 yards, but Flavin came through with a fourth-down strike to Elias Camacho, who outmaneuvered several tacklers and ran 31 yards for the go-ahead touchdown. On the subsequent two-point conversion attempt, Green picked up a fumble, reversed his direction, and ran 20 yards to the end zone to give Canton a 15-8 lead.
The Green Wave tied the score just before halftime, pouncing on a Bulldog fumble and driving the ball 67 yards for a touchdown. Abington then added a go-ahead touchdown just before the end of the third quarter.
For the game, Flavin led the rushing attack with 61 yards, while Camacho finished second on the team with 57 yards. Green did not touch the ball very much, gaining just 27 yards on the ground. Head coach Dave Bohane said Green had a hand injury, and he credited Abington’s defense with forcing Canton into several third-and-long situations.
“We are not a team that can win with many third and 10 situations,” he said.
Overall, Bohane felt the team played well in the non-league portion of its schedule, and he is hoping it has helped prepare them for a tough Hockomock League schedule to come.
Canton’s Justin Rudy played a superb two-way game, playing on the offensive line and leading the team with 11 tackles, including nine in the second half. Senior cornerback Joe Khoury also played well, finishing with seven tackles. The Bulldogs also had two sacks in the game — one by Camacho and another split between Rudy and Sir D’Wayne Reid.
