Girls’ soccer team crushes Oliver Ames

By

After a pair of subpar performances the week before against Franklin and Milford, the Canton High girls’ soccer team traveled to Oliver Ames last Thursday and rediscovered its groove, pummeling the Tigers on their home field 7-0 to improve to 3-1-1 overall.

It was exactly the kind of performance that head coach Paul Turner was hoping to see from his talented squad — one in which the Bulldogs dominated possession and generally made things difficult for their hosts all afternoon.

“We scored some good goals,” said Turner. “We defended well after kind of a tough stretch the week before. It was a very good win for us.”

Turner was particularly impressed with the girls’ aggressiveness late in the first half. Already up big after netting three early goals, the Bulldogs weathered an OA surge and then pushed back, tacking on two extra goals before halftime to take a commanding 5-0 lead.

The visitors then continued their strong play throughout the second half and added two more scores for good measure, giving them a season-high seven for the game.

Senior captains Lauren Berman and Brianna Duserick both finished with two goals in the win, while fellow senior captain Meg Lennon and juniors Kim McNally and Rachel Campagna added one goal apiece.

The two goals by Berman were the 99th and 100th of her career — a truly remarkable achievement for a player who is often the focal point of an opponent’s defensive game plan.

The reigning Hockomock League MVP, Berman has been nearly unstoppable this season and currently leads the Bulldogs with 10 goals through five games.

“Lauren’s been fantastic; she always has been,” Turner said of the Maryland-bound phenom. “She works as hard, if not harder, than anyone else out there, and I think that’s one of the key reasons for her success.”

This week, the Bulldogs were hoping to build on their most recent win as they continued a three-game stretch of away matches, including a huge showdown with first-place Sharon on Monday and a date with Foxboro, another Davenport Division foe, tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. The girls will next play at home on Monday evening, October 1, against Stoughton.
