CHS students join Team Tara for upcoming breast cancer walk

By

Dear Editor:

For the past 12 years, the students of Canton High School and I have participated in the Annual Walk for Breast Cancer. Over the last three years the students, with the support of the community, have raised over $31,000. The 2010 walk was a special year as we had over 80 students raise $15,000. This was the second most of all high schools in the state and the students were recognized on the Hatch Shell.

Tara Shuman (CHS '98)

This year, we will have close to 100 students participating. The students have decided to dedicate this year’s walk in honor of Mrs. Tara Shuman and her dedication and courage as she takes on and conquers this disease. The students, with the generous support of the Canton Association of Business and Industry (CABI), will be walking the 6.2-mile walk in black and pink Team Tara shirts, designed by Canton High School senior Lauren Oldenburg.

The students and I believe that one day, breast cancer will never steal another year from anyone’s life — and we will live in a world with less breast cancer and more birthdays. That’s why we are walking in the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event. Not only is this our opportunity to join our community to fight back against breast cancer; it is a way to inspire hope by raising funds and awareness to help those facing the disease and save more lives. It is the students’ way of knowing they can make a difference in the lives of others.

Maybe one of the 100 students is your neighbor, a friend of the family, etc. If you would like to make a donation on behalf of one of the students, please go to cancer.org/stridesonline, type in Canton High School in the team box, click on the Canton High School icon and the student’s name.

Thank you in advance for any help you may be able to give. I understand these are tough economic times. Even if you can’t give, please keep the students of Canton High in your thoughts as they try to do their part to make a difference. They are an incredible group of young adults that the community can be proud of.

Sincerely,

Ed Amico
