CHS golfers shine in wins vs. NA, Foxboro
By Mike BergerComing off a disappointing home loss to Taunton 10 days ago, the CHS golf team rebounded with two wins last week and improved to 5-3. This week the Bulldogs are setting their sights on first-place Sharon in a key Davenport Division matchup scheduled for Tuesday at Sharon Country Club.
Last week, the Bulldogs went on the road and beat North Attleboro 150-160 and then beat Foxboro at home 161-164 on a rainy day. The win against the Warriors qualified Canton for the state tournament as the team guaranteed itself a .500 record or better against division opponents.
Canton head coach Jim Spillane said the Bulldogs’ score against NA on Monday was their best team score in several years. “That great team score of 150 on an opponent’s home course is a good indication you are firing on all cylinders,” said Spillane.
With a par of 35 at Locus Valley in North Attleboro, junior Sam Riemer had the best score of his career with a one under par 34. Riemer was followed by junior Sam Hrubec with a 37, junior Brian Brooks with a 38, and Gavin Monagle and Mike Breviglia with 40s.
Last Wednesday, the Bulldogs avenged an earlier loss to the Warriors with a three-shot win in rainy conditions at the Blue Hill Country Club. Senior JC Marcone led the way with a four over par 39, followed by Riemer and Brooks with 40s, and Hrubec with a 42.
“The day was not conducive to low scores,” said Spillane, “but we did what we had to do to beat a good team in Foxboro.”
Besides the October 9 road visit to Sharon, Canton will also host Milford on October 11 in a match that will include the junior varsity golfers.
