Great week for both cross country teams
By Mike BergerThe CHS boys’ cross country team earned its first victory of the season, and the girls nabbed their fourth dual meet win in five tries last week against Stoughton.
Both teams also had a good showing in the state Twilight Meet, held Saturday evening in Falmouth.
In the boys’ 28-29 win over the Black Knights, senior Kevin McNeil finished first for Canton and third overall, covering the hilly 5k course at Houghton’s Pond in 18:37. Senior Scott Buresh was close behind, sprinting past Stoughton’s third runner and finishing fourth overall in 18:52. Junior Joe Clancy finished sixth overall in 18:58. Senior Craig Mills also had a strong race, as did senior captain Mike Rota and junior Matt Derbin.
Other Canton runners included: Ian Mills, 12th, 19:58; Courtland Priest, 13th, 20:04; Joe Sabatino, 14th, 20:07; Dan Bronstein, 16th, 21:13; Brian Rota, 17th, 21:17; Sam Nagel, 19th, 21:27; and Sean Klimas, 20th, 21:32.
Meanwhile, the girls’ team finished off the regular season at 4-1 by beating a strong Stoughton team 26-30. Junior Amanda Eagles finished third overall on the 3.1-mile course in 21:23. Senior captain Eleni Papadopoulos ran second for Canton and fourth overall in 21:51, followed close behind by senior captain Kelsey Sayers in 21:53. Freshman standout Catherine Song finished sixth overall in 22 minutes.
Other lady runners for Canton included: Courtney Loughnane, eighth, 22:14; Michaela Kelly, 10th, 22:48; Julia Guerini, 12th, 23:14; Alyssa Wysocki, 13th, 23:35; Kate McClintock, 15th, 24:09; Lauren Winter, 16th, 24:47; and Katelyn Gellermen, 20th, 26:31.
In the Twilight Meet held at the Barnstable County Fairgrounds, Song finished ninth out of 195 runners in the freshman girls’ race as she covered the 2.1-mile course in 13:52. Song received a medal for her speedy performance. “It was a really impressive race,” said CHS head coach Christa Marr.
Papadopoulos also excelled at the meet, placing 58th out of 152 runners in the varsity girls’ small school 5k race with a time of 20:50. Lauren Winter also ran strong, finishing 121st at 23:49.
For the boys’ team, Priest ran 90th out of 271 runners in the freshman race, covering the course in 13:12. Spencer Polsgrove ran the sophomore boys’ 3.1-mile race in 19:29 to finish 102nd out of 240 runners. Mike Salvatori finished the same race at 184th in 21:40.
Craig Mills was the top Canton runner in the varsity boys’ small school race, finishing 127th out of 175 runners in 19:29. Senior Ian Mills finished second for Canton in 20:14 (150th), followed by Bronstein in 20:47.
