The Open Book: Canton Public Library News
By Canton CitizenThe library will host a free financial literacy seminar on Wednesday, October 24, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Community Room. Presented by Robert LoRe of Early Investors Inc., the seminar will show you how to pay down student loans or other debts while saving for the future.
The recession of the last few years has spared no one, including recent college graduates. With jobs scarce and bills to pay, even recent college graduates are having difficulty keeping up, let alone getting ahead. Join us in exploring some traditional tools as well as creative ways to work off that debt while still building a solid financial future.
Current students, recent and not so recent graduates and parents alike will all find something useful in this seminar. To register, please email rlore@earlyinvestors.org
A second free seminar, focusing on changes to Medicare and Social Security, will be presented by Pro-Equities, Inc. on Monday, October 29, from 3-5 p.m. in the Community Room.
On Saturday, October 20, the Friends of the Library’s Open Book Coffeehouse will present Magnolia, New England’s Cajun band since 1989, featuring twin fiddles, accordion, guitar, bass, and rich vocals. Bring your dancin’ shoes for this one! Check out the band! Admission is $12 for adults and $6 for students. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. and the music starts at 7:30.
On Wednesday, November 7, pastel artist Gregory Maichack will conduct a Georgia O’Keeffe pastel workshop from 6-8 p.m. at the library.
Become inspired to create beautiful pastel paintings by exploring America’s foremost modernist pastel painter of flowers. Focusing on the calla lily, participants will work in tandem with the artist. Topics such as O’Keeffe’s landscapes, shells and more will be covered. From sheer beginners with no experience to advanced students, all will experiment with hundreds of pastels, learning pastel handling techniques O’Keeffe used in her pastel art. All materials will be provided, including an array of professional grade pastels, pastel pencils, Rembrandt pastels, and assorted Canson pastel paper.
Registration is limited to 18 people. In-person sign-up is required at the main desk. This program is sponsored by the Canton Cultural Council.
