Swimmers impress in opening week of action
By Jay TurnerBoth CHS swim teams are off to promising starts this season, highlighted by a double victory over Old Rochester at home last Wednesday and an 88-69 win by the girls’ team at Attleboro on Friday.
The girls are now 2-0 on the season while the boys stand at 1-1 after a close loss to the Bombardiers.
In the Old Rochester meet held at Blue Hills Regional School, the Bulldogs posted several first-place finishes and both squads won handily — 94-46 for the boys and 92-62 for the girls.
The girls also had four swimmers qualify for the sectional and state meets, led by sophomore Shannon McLaughlin in both the 500 freestyle and 100 fly. McLaughlin also qualified as part of the 200 IM relay team along with Julia Guerini, Amanda Walsh, and Kim Frazier.
In addition, freshman Tiffany Ha placed first in the 200 free, Frazier won the 100 fly, and Guerini and Hailee Duserick finished first and second in the 100 free.
On the boys’ side, Tim Conway and Anthonie Maffie finished 1-2 in the 200 free; Daniel Lupo won the 100 backstroke; Yanni Papadopoulos, Christian Hobbs, and James Gilmore swept the 50 free; and Kevin Wing and Steven Hellmuth finished first and second in the 100 fly.
Both teams also swam well against Attleboro on Friday, led by sophomore McLaughlin, who qualified for sectionals and states in the 200 free with a time of 2:06.40.
McLaughlin also qualified as part of the 200 free relay along with Frazier, Brianna Duserick, and Hailee Duserick. Other top performers included Ha in the 100 backstroke (1:09.58); Rachel McHugh, who shattered her previous personal-best time in the 500 free; and Walsh, Guerini and Shay Connolly, who finished 2-3-4 in the 200 IM.
The boys lost 92-68 but still got strong performances from several swimmers, including Wing and Hellmuth in the 100 fly, Lupo in the 100 backstroke, Conway in the 200 free, and the 200 free relay team of Hanscom, Wing, Hobbs and Lupo.
