Girls’ hoop team falls to Taunton in opener
By Jay TurnerThe CHS girls’ basketball team suffered a convincing defeat in its season opener last Friday against Taunton, but there were plenty of positive takeaways from the 70-39 loss, according to head coach Caitlin Jamiel.
Jamiel, in fact, thought the Bulldogs played an “awesome” game against a much bigger school with a considerably taller roster, and she chalked up the scoring disparity to a red-hot shooting night by the Tigers.
“The score doesn’t reflect how we played,” said Jamiel. “Taunton shot the ball unbelievably well. They were hitting all of their outside shots.”
The second-year coach said her team’s two greatest strengths — athleticism and chemistry — were both on display Friday night, and she was especially pleased to see some of the younger players perform at a high level right out of the gate.
One of those players, sophomore shooting guard Eileen Khoury, poured in a team-high 16 points, including a pair of three pointers, while another sophomore, Gabby Kenefick, played well in her debut as the team’s starting point guard.
The Bulldogs also got contributions from two freshmen, Rye Verille (8 points) and Hayley Mulford, as well as several returning players, including senior captains Caitlyn Hathaway, Kelly Bradley, and Kristen Burns.
The team’s fourth captain, senior Sarah Winkler, is currently out with an injury; however, all four have proven to be excellent leaders and role models, according to Jamiel.
“We have a great group of girls this year,” she said, “and the chemistry between them is incredible.”
Despite the loss to Taunton, Jamiel said she fully expects the Bulldogs to be competitive this season in the Davenport Division and is hoping to improve upon last season’s record and return to the MIAA tournament.
In the meantime, the girls will look to get into the win column with home games this week against Milford and Oliver Ames. The team will then head to East Bridgewater on December 27, followed by an eight-day break before returning to action on Friday, January 4, at Stoughton.
