CHS Alumni Association releases new directory
By Canton CitizenThe CHS Alumni Association was proud to present a copy of the 2012 edition of its alumni directory to CHS Principal Derek Folan, Canton Historical Society President Wally Gibbs, and Canton Public Library Director Mark Lague.
Canton High School alumni are scattered across the country, and even around the world. But no matter where their lives have led them, they all share a common bond — the place they started out.
The alumni association contracted with Harris Connect to create an updated alumni directory designed to help bring CHS alumni back together. This directory was published and distributed in November to those who purchased it. It includes biographical listings with contact information, career overviews, and family highlights, plus a special section about the history of Canton High School along with several photographs and other sections. This second edition of the directory was dedicated to those alumni who lost their lives during active military duty. The class information dates back to the first CHS graduating class of 1869 up to the last graduating class of 2012.
CHS alumni were contacted by Harris Connect, via mail, email and phone to verify that their information was accurate and complete.
Harris Connect has more than 45 years of experience researching and publishing alumni and membership directories. They have worked with thousands of organizations, providing them with solutions to better engage their members. Today, they are a market leader in strategic affinity solutions — providing valuable data research, sophisticated internet services, and producing commemorative publications.
Under the direction of Diana Franco, the first CHS alumni directory was published in 2007 and was a big undertaking for the alumni association. It took great organization, many people, many hours and much research to collect information on all the alumni dating back to the first class in 1869. Sources of information included yearbooks, graduating class programs, and the aid of the Guidance Department at the high school. Many months were spent in 2007 collecting, verifying and entering data, which was then sent to Harris Connect to be compiled and verified before going to press. The database created in 2007 has been maintained over the years to stay as current as possible. Harris provides an “online community” where alumni can update their information, publicize their reunions, and much more. The alumni association continues to collect updates from Harris Connect, alumni reunions and news articles to keep their database up to date.
Since 2005, when a small group of dedicated graduates first met, the CHS Alumni Association has evolved to include an active board of directors who work tirelessly to support CHS through a variety of fundraising efforts. Each year they provide support to reunion committees, a high school and department project, scholarships, awards night, and the list goes on.
The board of directors meets the second Wednesday of each month at their office in the Rodman Administration Building, 960 Washington Street. Current board members are Dr. Jim Haley ’61, president; Carolyn Christino ’68, vice president; George Franco ’55, treasurer; Arthur Radden ’59, recording secretary; Stephen Hagan ’58, correspondence secretary and clerk; Tula Sfougaris ’53, past president; Diana Franco ’59, database administrator; Diane Glenn ’59, Mary Harding ’59, Pat Landon ’62, Sue O’Neil ’59, and Thelma Rando ’54. The association currently has vacancies on the board of directors; interested parties can contact chsaa@cantonhighalumni.org.
