Mass Audubon VAC announces new name

The Mass Audubon Visual Arts Center, located at 963 Washington Street in Canton, has been renamed the Museum of American Bird Art at Mass Audubon, Director Amy Montague announced last month.

“The new name reflects more accurately our continuing commitment to collect, exhibit and interpret the highest quality artworks inspired by birds,” Montague wrote in the museum’s 2012 year in review. “It also acknowledges our unique role as the only museum with a singular focus on American bird art in its multitude of expressions — whether traditionally categorized as natural history art, fine art, folk art, field guide illustration, or sporting art.”

Montague said the selection of the new name was the result of a “strategic planning effort,” with the idea that the name change “would be a catalyst for growth.”

“Soon after it was announced, we received a major gift: a generous donation of $200,000 to support capacity building and rebranding,” she said. “This is a thrilling affirmation of our direction, providing resources for our continuing efforts toward strategic growth.

“Additionally, we’ve begun the process of reorganizing our Advisory Committee and initiating a Collections Advisory Committee. We’re benefitting from a widening circle of people engaged in shaping the future of our unique museum.”

Located on a 124-acre wildlife sanctuary directly across from Canton High School, the Museum of American Bird Art at Mass Audubon houses Mass Audubon’s extensive art collection, which is shared with the public through exhibitions as well as through a wide variety of education programs.

Programs are offered in many formats, including hands-on art classes in drawing, photography, watercolor, and other mediums, as well as gallery talks and nature exploration. On- and off-site programs serve children, adults, families, and school and community groups.
