Girls’ basketball falls to 1-3 with loss to EB
By Jay TurnerThe Canton High girls’ basketball team played just one game last week, but it was a forgettable performance as the Bulldogs fell to nonleague East Bridgewater 59-27 on Thursday, December 27.
It was the third time this season that Canton has lost by 30 or more points, and it left the squad searching for answers as it headed into the new year at 1-3 overall.
Against East Bridgewater, the Bulldogs simply dug themselves too big of a hole, falling behind 17-0 in the opening quarter before regrouping at the start of the second quarter. Head coach Caitlin Jamiel said the girls were reasonably competitive for the remainder of the game, but it was not enough to put a dent in the deficit as the Vikings rolled to an easy victory.
“[East Bridgewater] came out very, very strong,” said Jamiel. “They were very athletic and very quick, and our girls kind of played scared in the first quarter, to be honest.”
Although disappointed by the slow start, Jamiel did praise her team for fighting to make a game of it over the final three quarters, and she is confident that the girls will continue to work hard and get better over the remainder of the season.
For now, the Bulldogs will have their work cut out for them as they continue a stretch of four straight away games, including this Friday night at Attleboro. They will then travel to Sharon next Tuesday, January 8, followed by a game at Stoughton next Friday, January 11.
