Girls’ track team beats Sharon; boys still winless
By Mike BergerWith impressive performances from Mellyn Costello, Lauren Berman and Michaela Kelly, the CHS girls’ indoor track team upped its league record to 2-1 with a 52-42 win over Sharon.
The boys’ team is still looking for its first win as the squad was defeated 75-19 despite a great performance from Obi Nwankwo in two events.
In the December 23 meet held at Boston University, Costello swept the 55-meter dash, 55-meter hurdles, and the long jump for the second straight meet. According to head coach Dan Ashman, Costello is undefeated through nine events so far.
Berman won both the mile and two-mile, although Ashman noted her times were nowhere near what she is capable of running.
“Lauren has been very sick for the past week but chose to gut it out as she is a real competitor and great teammate,” he said. “These two young women are proving to be the class of the Hockomock League this year.”
Costello won the 55-meter dash in 8.07 seconds, the 55-meter hurdles in 10.07 seconds, and the long jump with a distance of 14 feet, seven inches. Michaela Kelly finished first in the 600 meters in 1:46.79, and Berman won the two-mile in 11:59.33.
Second places were earned by Kelly in the 300 (45.95 sec), Berman in the mile (5:32.23), and Ellie Teague in the 55-meter hurdles (10.61).
Also scoring a point was Alexa Macquarrie, who finished third in the 55-meter dash in 8.24 seconds.
In the boys’ meet, Nwankwo won both the 55-meter dash (7 sec) and 600 (1:24.37). Ashman said Nwankwo is unbeaten in six events this season.
“His 600 was the third fastest run in Massachusetts this year and makes him the favorite to win the Division 3 title in the event,” said Ashman. “He will have a great matchup next meet (Jan. 8) against Foxboro’s Kivone Howard in the 300. Howard has the fastest 300 time in the nation this year.”
Other point scorers for the boys’ team were: Craig Mills, third, 300, 39.56 seconds; Craig Mills, second, 600, 1:29.92; and Matt Waldman, second, shot put, 34 feet, three inches.
Both teams will face Foxboro at Boston University next Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. and Oliver Ames on Monday, January 14, at the Reggie Lewis Track Center in Boston.
