Gymnasts get back on track with 2 more wins
By Holly EricksonIt looks as though the CHS gymnastics team has found its rhythm. With wins against both North Attleboro and Attleboro, the squad went 2-0 over the recent three-day weekend, giving them a 3-2 record overall.
On Saturday, the team faced some stiff competition from the North Attleboro gymnasts, but season-high scores from a few of the girls gave Canton the 130.9-130.5 victory.
Among those standout performers were sophomore Meghan Peters, senior captain Jessie Brooks, and junior Rachel Leibovitz — all of whom earned season bests on the floor. Peters came away with an 8.9, Brooks with an 8.75, and Leibovitz with an 8.6. In addition, freshman Stephanie Milne placed second with a 9.15, and sophomore standout Abby Green, battling Achilles pain, still managed to earn a 9.05.
Head coach Carla King credited much of the win to the girls’ persistence in perfecting their routines. “The girls have been working so hard on cleaning up every little thing in their routines, and it definitely showed,” she said.
Following up this hard-fought meet, the squad hosted the Attleboro Blue Bombardiers this past Monday. This time, the girls distanced themselves from the competition with a 130.2-127.3 win.
The Bulldogs were led by Milne, who had an unbelievable showing on the beam with a season-high 9.3, earning her first place. She went on to earn first on the floor with an 8.7 and on bars with an 8.3, while her 9.1 on the vault left her in a tie for second place.
Teammate Green continued her dominance, most impressively on the vault, with a season-high score of 9.3 that landed her in first place. Showing her versatility and strength, she went on to capture second place on bars (8.2), beam (8.4), and floor (8.5).
Co-captains Brooks and Lizzy Doherty also found their stride on the vault, with season-high scores for both (8.4 for Brooks, 8.2 for Doherty). The vault was apparently the place to be, as sophomore Danielle Arthur also earned a season-high 7.5, and junior Steph Garofalo, in her first meet of the season, earned a solid 7.1. Also of note was freshman Mollie Norian’s performance on the beam, where she earned a season-best 7.2.
“All the girls have been working really hard, and these wins are so deserved,” said King following Monday’s victory over Attleboro. She went on to compliment the work of her underclassmen. “The freshmen have been improving each meet, and I’m so pleased to see Garofalo and Arthur getting comfortable with vault,” she said.
