Woman charged in hit-and-run accident
By Mike BergerCanton Police made an arrest in connection with a hit-and-run accident that injured a pedestrian at the intersection of Washington and Royall streets on Monday evening, January 14.
Melissa Boney, 25, of Brockton, has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident with personal injury, texting while operating a motor vehicle, negligent operation, and injury from mobile phone use.
“It was incredible investigative police work by all officers involved,” said Deputy Police Chief Helena Findlen. “They dug and dug and as a result identified the suspect. Thankfully, the victim is stable with no life-threatening injuries. This could have ended far more tragically. We again urge motorists to follow the law and do not text and drive.”
Canton man arrested for marijuana trafficking
Canton Police, in a joint investigation with the Massachusetts State Police Drug Task Force and Stoughton Police, arrested four men — including a Canton man — and seized as much as 70 pounds of alleged marijuana and $110,000 in possible drug proceeds, according to Deputy Chief Helena Findlen.
“This is an investigation that began in September, focusing on the illegal distribution of marijuana in this area,” said Findlen.
William H. Newman, 32, of 84 Walpole Street, pled not guilty on Wednesday, January 23, at his Stoughton District Court arraignment to trafficking in marijuana and conspiracy to violate the drug law. Assistant District Attorney Michael C. Connolly successfully argued for $50,000 cash bail. Newman is due back February 12 for pre-trial conference. Newman’s occupation was given as a mortgage broker at Newman Financial Group in Canton.
Also arrested were Jose Marquez, 31, of North Hollywood, California; Colin Beauregard, 26, of Lowell; and Joseph Shelzi of Pelham, New Hampshire.
Marquez pled not guilty to possession of a class E substance (Xanax), and his bail was set at $3,000 along with a return date of February 12. Beauregard and Shelzi both pled not guilty to possession with intent to distribute a class D substance (marijuana), unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and conspiracy to violate the drug law. Both were held on $20,000 cash bail and ordered to return February 12.
Shelzi, in addition to his bail, was also held on an outstanding warrant from the Boston Municipal Court.
“Surveillance was established at approximately 10 a.m., with detectives observing this defendant’s movements for several hours, until it was believed a large-scale transfer of drugs and money had taken place among these defendants,” Findlen said.
“Initial seizures of drugs and cash at roughly 1 p.m. led to the issuance of a search warrant for the lead defendant’s Canton apartment, where additional material believed to be drugs and thousands of dollars in additional U.S. currency was seized,” added Findlen. “This investigation involved excellent professional cooperation with the Canton and Stoughton Police departments and the Massachusetts State Police and has resulted in the disruption of what these charges allege to be a substantial trafficking operation.”
