Girls’ hockey team has letdown versus Medway/Ashland

After a string of impressive performances, including a title-clinching win over division foe Westwood, the Canton High girls’ ice hockey team suffered a bit of a letdown last Monday against Medway/Ashland, settling for a 3-3 draw to bring its record to 14-2-1 overall.

The Bulldogs’ other game last week, a highly anticipated showdown against Division 1 Hingham, was postponed due to the blizzard and will be made up on February 18. They were also due to host Medfield on Wednesday and will wrap up the regular season next Thursday at nonleague Walpole.

As for the Medway/Ashland game, head coach Dennis Aldrich acknowledged that it was not the girls’ best performance, although they still had stretches of dominance and finished with a 37-11 advantage in shots on net.

The game, which was played in Marlborough at the New England Sports Center, also featured a big milestone moment for senior captain Meaghan McKenna as she netted her 30th goal of the season — a rare feat in high school hockey, according to Aldrich.

“It’s truly incredible what Meaghan’s been able to accomplish,” said the first-year coach. “And she could have had even more goals, but she’s had the classiness to back off and let her teammates get involved.”

Fellow captain Meg Lennon, the team’s second leading scorer, had the other two goals for the Bulldogs, while Julie Nagel, Emily Lanci, Casey Considine, and Bethany Kelly each had one assist.

Canton actually had a 3-0 lead at one point in the second period before Medway/Ashland stormed back with three straight goals of their own, including the game-tying score midway through the final frame.

“We let up a couple of soft goals and we took a couple of penalties,” said Aldrich afterwards. “We put pressure on them at the end of the game, but it was too little, too late.”

Despite the disappointing finish, Aldrich said his team is ready to move on and he fully expects them to make some noise in the upcoming postseason tournament.

“I really like where we are right now,” he said. “I think we still have a ways to go, and it’s clear that we have a big target on us. Basically, we’re not going to sneak up on anybody.”
