Girls’ indoor track boasts 3 league title winners
By Mike BergerThree members of the CHS girls’ indoor track team won league titles at the recent Hockomock Championship meet: Mellyn Costello in the 55-meter hurdles, Lauren Berman in the 1,000 meters, and Amanda Eagles in the two-mile.
In addition, Obi Nwankwo and Craig Mills finished second in the 300 and 600-meter races, respectively.
Costello, Berman and Nwankwo were all eligible for last weekend’s All-State meet, according to head coach Dan Ashman. Berman was scratched due to an illness, and Costello and Nwankwo had subpar performances.
In the league meet held February 19, Costello ran the hurdles in 8.99 seconds in the preliminary race and nine seconds in the event finals. Berman’s winning time in the the 1,000 was 3:08.87, and Eagles won the two-mile in 12:27.70.
Costello also finished second in the long jump (15’8.5”); Michaela Kelly finished second in the 600 (1:44.50); and Eleni Papadopoulos finished fifth in the 1,000 (3:19.97).
On the boys’ side, Nwankwo ran a 36.88 in the 300; Craig Mills ran a 1:27.11 in the 600; and Ian Mills finished fifth in the 1,000 (2:45.06).
