Speaker to bring powerful message to Canton community
By Canton CitizenDear Editor:
As the mother of two teenagers and an educator in the Milton and Canton public schools since the late 1970s, I’ve had about 30 years of interaction with middle school, high school, and even preschool youngsters in these communities. Last spring, I found myself at a wake and funeral for a former student, just days shy of his 20th birthday.
He was a fun-loving young man with a twinkle in his eye, but also with a terrible weakness for drugs. This young man was one of a growing number of young people in our midst that have tried and failed to shake free of drug addiction.
In October 2012, the Milton Public Schools brought Chris Herren and Project Purple to the community as well as to the students and staff of Milton High School. His presentation is riveting, honest, and well worth every minute of your time.
On Wednesday, March 27, Herren will be speaking to the Canton community at 7 p.m. Although I’ve heard his presentation twice already, I will be there with one of my daughters while the other will hear him with the student body of Canton High.
If your children hear the presentation and you’re unable to attend, ask them about it and look up Project Purple. It’s very difficult to admit that drugs are taking over the lives of some of our youth, but looking the other way isn’t helping either.
Hope that you consider attending.
