Softball doubleheader to benefit Project Purple
By Canton CitizenOn Saturday, April 13, the Canton High School softball team (0-3) will play a special doubleheader against Boston Latin Academy with games starting at 10 a.m. and noon at Memorial Field.
Although the games count in the standings and for tournament purposes, they also have added meaning as the Canton players and parents will be selling food and drink donated by the community and baked goods made by the players.
Their efforts will raise funds for Project Purple, an anti-substance abuse awareness program and an initiative of the Herren Project. Established by Fall River native Chris Herren — a former Boston Celtic, motivational speaker, author and sobriety advocate — the Herren Project assists individuals and families struggling with addiction.
Project Purple’s goals are to create awareness and educate the public on the epidemic of substance abuse while encouraging teens and people of all ages to make good choices and stand up to drugs and alcohol. Herren recently came to Canton High to speak to the students, parents, and the community at large.
Head coach Ed Amico said he is “very proud of how the team has come together for this great cause.”
“They solicited all the donations, made posters and signs, and have special purple shirts and socks for the game,” Amico said. “They are a wonderful group of girls who realize that they have the ability to make a difference on the field, but more importantly off the field. These girls show up every day, work hard, have fun, and are dedicated and passionate about getting better. They have taken those same qualities to hopefully make a difference in the lives of others.”
According to senior captain Brittany Ferzoco, a day like this is something every school needs. Saturday will be a day to support a growing concern across the country and the region, and bring Canton High and Boston Latin Academy together for a wonderful cause.
