Brennan, John E.
By Canton CitizenJohn E. Brennan, 78, of West Barnstable, formerly of Canton, died unexpectedly April 14, 2013.
Born in Cambridge, John grew up in Belmont and graduated from Belmont High School and then from Boston College in 1955. After serving briefly in the Army, he worked as an executive for Bradlees department stores for 30 years until retiring in 1995.
John and his wife, Elee, moved to Canton in 1965 and became actively involved in community organizations, including the Canton Lions Club and the Ponkapoag Civic Association where John held various positions of leadership. He served as chairman of the Canton Finance Committee and Capital Outlay Committee. During this time John also served in leadership positions in the Association of (Massachusetts) Town Finance Committees and the Massachusetts Municipal Association.
John and Elee moved to West Barnstable on Cape Cod in 1996, and he was appointed by the town manager to serve on several financial advisory committees in Barnstable. He held an elected position on the Prudential committee for the West Barnstable Fire and Water District. For several years after moving to Cape Cod John taught courses relating to municipal government and municipal finance in the continuing education division of Cape Cod Community College.
Devoted husband of the late Eleanor M. Brennan (Hooper). Loving father of Sheila C. Brennan of Belchertown. Loving brother of Joan F. Goodwin of Dedham and M. Constance Ryan of Portland, ME. John is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
A memorial mass will be celebrated April 27 at 11 a.m. in St. Gerard Majella Church, 1860 Washington Street in Canton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. The Pushard Family Funeral Home, 210 Sherman Street, is assisting the family with the arrangements. Interment is private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canton Public Library, c/o Joseph Roman, 786 Washington St., Canton, MA 02021.
