Girls’ lax team keeps pace in Davenport
By Jay TurnerThe Canton High girls’ lacrosse team continued an early season trend last week by splitting its two games over April vacation, falling to nonleague Apponequet Regional 19-15 before bouncing back with a road win over division opponent Oliver Ames 13-10.
Monday’s loss to Apponequet dropped the Bulldogs to 0-2 this season against the Lakers and 0-3 in nonleague games. On the flip side, Canton is now 3-1 against Hockomock opponents and went into this week trailing only Foxboro for the Davenport Division lead.
Of the two games last week, the Bulldogs actually played better against Apponequet, mounting an impressive rally from eight goals down before running out of time in the second half. For the majority of the half the girls played with one fewer player — the result of getting four yellow cards — but they started winning draws and controlling the transition game, outscoring the Lakers 10-6 in the process.
“We sort of woke up after playing with a man down,” said head coach Chris Murtagh. “We started making a comeback and had a run of three goals in a row at one point. Unfortunately, we were unable to hold onto it.”
Senior captain and team-scoring leader Meghan Lennon had another monster game with six goals, while Jackie Merrigan and Mary McNeil finished with three goals apiece. Jackie Martin, Kaitlin Phillips, and Sam Sullivan each added one goal in the loss.
In Wednesday’s game against Oliver Ames, the Bulldogs played well enough to eke out a victory, but they could have made it a lot easier on themselves, according to Murtagh.
“We’re happy with the win and we’ll certainly take it,” he said, “but it should not have been that close. We sometimes have a tendency to let teams stay in the game and hang around for a while.”
Lennon once again led the Bulldogs in the scoring department with seven goals — giving her 30 for the season. Merrigan also had another big game, tallying two goals and five assists, while McNeil, Jen Martin, Phillips, and Sullivan added one goal apiece.
Goalie Isabelle Hegland, who has filled in for the injured Abby Mitcheroney, had a solid performance in net and continues to improve with every game.
This week, the Bulldogs had two more league games scheduled, including an away game Monday versus Sharon and an important showdown with Foxboro on Wednesday. Their next game is Monday, April 29, at Medway, followed by another away game — their seventh in a row — on Wednesday, May 1, against King Philip.
