By Canton CitizenQueenie Holmberg (Garoian), 89, of Canton, passed away peacefully on April 21.
Beloved wife of the late Dewey, she is survived by son Scott of Atlanta, daughter Melanie and her husband, Arthur Zoidis, of Canton and Boston, and grandsons Timothy Zoidis of Canton and Matthew Holmberg of Cambridge. She was the cherished sister of the late Marion Manoogian of Amherst, NH. Queenie also leaves many other loved relatives and friends.
Known as the “Knitting Guru,” Queenie owned Queenie’s Yarn Shop in Canton for over 25 years. She was born and lived in Providence, Rhode Island, until her move to Canton over 60 years ago. Queenie loved to garden, cook and entertain. Her home and shop were frequented by many, and they were most attracted by her warmth, generosity and sense of humor.
She was a longtime and very active member of First Parish Unitarian Universalist in Canton until her move last year to Sunrise Assisted Living of Norwood and a longtime member of The Compatriotic Union of Habousie. After retirement, Queenie became a volunteer at the Luce Elementary School; was a faithful member of Terban Health and Fitness Center in Stoughton as well as the Boston Knitter’s Guild; enjoyed Boston Symphony Orchestra season tickets; took classes at Boston University; and enjoyed world travel with her family and friends. Among her many volunteer activities were the Canton League of Women Voters, Canton Red Cross, the board of directors for the Campfire Girls of Greater Boston, Canton Informal Players, Dean S. Luce PTA, Canton Campfire Girls, and Canton Cub Scouts.
Memorial services will be held at First Parish Unitarian Universalist in Canton on Saturday, May 18, at 10:30 a.m. Those wishing to remember Queenie can make a donation to the rebuilding fund of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Brunswick (UUCB), PO Box 129, Brunswick, ME 04011, or to Hope Hospice, 73 Service Rd., E.
