Outdoor track season ends at D3 championships
By Mike BergerUnfortunately a cold, windy afternoon at Pembroke High this past Sunday did not produce great performances from the Canton High track team members who qualified for the MIAA Division 3 championship meet.
“With the cold weather and wind, it was a pretty brutal day for a track meet,” said head coach Dan Ashman. “Very few athletes reached their best times and distances.”
To continue on to the state meet, participants had to place in the top four of each event. The highest finisher was the boys’ 4×400 relay team, which placed sixth in 3:37.84 behind seniors Craig and Ian Mills, junior Matt Derbin, and senior Mike Rota. Ian and Craig Mills finished 10th and 11th in the 400-meter race, respectively, with times of 52.73 and 52.98 seconds. Junior Michaela Kelly also placed 10th in the 400 in 62.69 seconds.
The athlete impacted most by the weather was senior Mellyn Costello, Canton’s top scorer. Costello finished ninth in the preliminary heat of the 100-meter hurdles, missing out on the finals by one spot. “I didn’t realize until [Monday] morning, but her heat ran into a -1.8 wind, while every other heat ran with a 2.0 or 2.7 at their backs,” said Ashman.
Costello also came up short in the long jump and triple jump. “Everyone has that one day where they just don’t have their legs right,” said Ashman. “It’s just unlucky that hers fell on this day.”
