Canton’s state Senator Brian A. Joyce recently announced that the town of Canton will receive $1,856,687 in local aid from the state and $4,751,687 in aid to Canton schools. According to the Canton Finance Committee, state aid was $715,000 more than anticipated.

The past several winters caused the snow and ice account to be overdrawn by nearly $520,000, but additional revenues, such as the meals tax, hotel tax, additional state aid, and lease payments from the solar farm more than made up for any shortfalls.

The Canton town budget for fiscal year 2014 includes an operating budget of $76.5 million. The fiscal year 2014 budget represents a 3.5 percent increase over last year’s budget and a 4.4 percent increase for Canton schools.

Sal Salvatori is the new chairman of the Canton Board of Selectmen.

The recent town meeting approved a transfer of $35,000 from the free cash account to the Canton Recreation Department budget for this year’s July 4 community celebration.

According to insurance companies, the average cost to settle a dog bite case in 2012 was $29,752.

Dottie “The Bingo Lady” Morris and her main assistant, Anne Doody, along with her many associates recently held a pre-Memorial Day bingo game on Sunday, May 26, at the Hagan Community Clubhouse. Raffle prizes were donated by Canton Housing Authority Executive Director Mark Roy, and pizza was donated by Housing Authority member Glen Hannington. A great time was had by all who attended.

The Canton A’s of the Cranberry Baseball League had their first former player, Chris Colabello, called up to the major leagues by the Minnesota Twins last week. Colabello was an all-league first baseman nine years ago with the A’s.

The general manager of the Canton A’s is Cab Devoll. They are coached by Kee Arguimbau and Canton legend and Cranberry League Hall of Famer Bob Gibson Jr., whose dad, Bob Gibson Sr., was the CHS baseball coach for 33 years and who the CHS field is named after.

The unemployment rate in the United States for young people between the ages of 15 and 24 is 16.1 percent, while in Europe, the unemployment rate is 23.5 percent. In Greece and Spain, youth unemployment is over 50 percent.

The Canton Police Association will hold a golf tournament on August 5 at the Blue Hill Country Club in Canton to benefit MBTA Officer Richard Donohue, who was shot in Watertown on April 19 during a gun battle with the Boston Marathon bombing suspects. According to Canton Police Association President Scott Connor, the entry fee is $135 per player. For more information, call 508-326-1706.

Meghan Lennon scored over 200 goals during her Canton High School lacrosse career.

For those interested, Saint Gerard’s is planning a trip to the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania June 24-26, three days, two nights, staying at the Deluxe Holiday Inn in Williamsport. The tour includes four meals: A Susquehanna River dinner cruise, a special dinner at a Victorian mansion, and two full breakfasts. Also included is a tour through Williamsport’s Millionaire Row and a visit to the famous Little League ballpark. The cost is $389 per person, double occupancy, or $489 as a single. The patent for the painkiller OxyContin recently expired, but it could take years before a generic version of the widely abused painkiller becomes available.

A new version of the old beanbag game called the Cornhole Board Game is sweeping the country from the Midwest and along the Atlantic coastline and is now spreading into New England. In Massachusetts, cornhole enthusiasts can turn to the website www.bostoncornhole.com for information and rules of the game.

According to a 2013 survey of veterinarians, over 50 percent of dogs and cats in the United States are overweight, yet many pet owners don’t recognize the problem.

Selectmen recently appointed Ann Resca to the Canton Council on Aging.

Selectmen also appointed Ryan Sceviour as a permanent, full-time police officer to the Canton Police Department.

Canton School Superintendent Jeff Granatino recently announced that the 2012 Canton High School graduation rate of 96.8 percent was ranked by WCVB Channel 5 as the 19th highest among 250 high schools in the state.

The Silver Lake High School softball team outscored its opponents 206-7 during its 18-game regular season, a truly amazing record.

Starbucks coffee shops have banned outdoor smoking. The new rule will apply to the 7,000 shops owned and operated by the Starbucks Corp., regardless of whether they have outdoor smoking areas.

A rumor is one thing that gets thicker instead of thinner as it is spread.
