Post 24 gets new opponents after realignment
By Mike BergerThe summer season gets underway this week for the Canton American Legion Post 24 baseball team with a new schedule, the formation of a junior Legion team, and several returning members from last year’s team.
Former CHS pitching standout Greg Lyons returns for his second season as head coach as he tries to get his team into the playoffs. Last year’s squad finished sixth in District 6 West with a record of 10-12.
American Legion officials switched Canton back to District 6 East, which the team last played in three years ago. Opponents now include Braintree, Morrisette (Quincy), Hyde Park, Milton, Stoughton, Weymouth, Cohasset, and Holbrook. Last year’s opponents included Norwood, Walpole, Westwood, Franklin, Foxboro, Norfolk, and Medfield.
The 24-game schedule was due to begin Monday, June 10, with a home game against Braintree, followed by another home game on Tuesday against Morrisette and a road game Wednesday against Hyde Park at Catholic Memorial. Canton will then host Milton tomorrow night at CHS beginning at 5:45 p.m. and will travel to Stoughton on Sunday, June 16.
The team is composed of juniors and seniors from the Canton and Sharon high school teams as well as private school players from both towns.
Returning veterans include captains Drew Blake (Milton Academy) and Steve Mullaney from Canton and Jake Fishman and Nathan Pederson from Sharon. Other Canton players include Sam Larson, Jimmy Fitzgerald, Kevin O’Brien, Liam Murphy, Wyatt Golledge, Kevin Powers, and Pat Vartanian. Sharon players include Robert Carmody, Brian Gallagher, Andrew Casamento, Drew Maldment, Matt Shaffer, and Frank Sullivan.
Lyons will be assisted by veteran coach-manager Al Jackson, with Duke Gorham overseeing the junior team.
This year’s Legion team should have a solid pitching staff, led by Fishman, one of the top pitchers in the Hockomock League, as well as Larson and Fitzgerald. Blake and Pedersen were among the top hitters from last year.
