Young battery mates propel Legion to 2nd win
By Mike BergerTwo 15-year-old players from Canton helped propel the American Legion Post 24 baseball team to its second win in five games as Canton beat Cohasset 4-2. CHS freshman Kevin Powers threw a complete game, allowing just four hits and no earned runs, and catcher Rob Carmody of Thayer Academy did a great job behind the plate calling the game and keeping runners at bay.
In addition, Canton resident Drew Blake, a Milton Academy senior, was 2 for 3 at the plate with a three-run homerun and a solo homerun.
In other action last week, Canton fell to Holbrook 13-2 on the road Friday night. Its game against Weymouth, scheduled for last Monday, June 17, was rained out.
The team is now 2-3 and in seventh place in District 6 East. Head coach Greg Lyons was asked to assess the team after the first five games.
“I think that our team is pretty solid when everyone is around,” he said. “Unfortunately, we have a handful of guys that play AAU baseball as well as Legion and it really hurts us when we’re missing some or all of those guys, which was clear to see against Holbrook the other night.”
“We have a good mix of younger kids (15-16 year olds) and older second- and third-year players,” added Lyons. “However, our last three games we have only had four hits total as a team in each of them, so one way or another we are going to have to become way more consistent at the plate if we want to consistently win ball games.”
The team had a busy week with games scheduled for Monday at Morrisette (Quincy), Tuesday at Braintree, and Friday at home against Hyde Park at 5:45 p.m. They then will travel to Milton on Sunday, followed by games against Stoughton July 1, at Weymouth July 2, and Cohasset July 3 — all beginning at 5:45 p.m.
