Scout receives national award for saving brother’s life
By Canton CitizenAvery Morgan, a Boy Scout with Canton Troop 77, has been awarded the National Certificate of Merit by the Boy Scouts of America’s National Court of Honor.
National awards for lifesaving and meritorious action are made only for outstanding and unusual acts that demonstrate unusual heroism, skill, or bravery and reflect Scouting ideals. The National Certificate of Merit is awarded to a youth member who has performed a significant act of service that is deserving of special national recognition. In 2012, only 53 certificates of merit were awarded nationally.
Avery was recognized for his quick thinking and action at the dinner table that saved the life of his younger brother, Rylan. After Rylan started to choke on a chicken nugget, Avery calmly called for his parents and then successfully performed the Heimlich maneuver, applying the skills he had learned from earning the First Aid Merit Badge.
Avery’s calmness and cool actions under pressure saved Rylan’s life and prevented prolonged oxygen deprivation and much more serious injury.
He was presented with his National Certificate of Merit at the Old Colony Council’s Distinguished Citizen Award Dinner, which honored Diary of a Wimpy Kid author Jeff Kinney. Morgan is the first Boy Scout from Troop 77 to be awarded the National Certificate of Merit. Troop 77 is very proud of him and his lifesaving skills!
