CABI Business of the Month: FM Generator
By GuestSponsored by the Canton Economic Development Commission & the Canton Association of Business and Industry
Canton company FM Generator, Inc. keeps electrical power running for individuals, businesses and state governments in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey and Vermont. They have assisted the last three presidents when they have come to Boston. When President Obama visited in April, FM Generator laid the groundwork to power up the presidential communications system. Unlike our own cell phones, the Secret Service has its own private communication system that cannot be jammed by terrorists.
FM Generator is owned by longtime Canton resident Michael Molway, whose father founded the company in 1970. Originally his father worked out of one of several gas stations he owned in Dorchester. In 1981 the company moved to Canton, opening an office above the old Nicks restaurant on Neponset Street. Five years later they moved to Chapman Street, and after substantial growth they purchased the building at 35 Pequit Street, where they are now located.
Over the past several years, FM Generator has continued to grow and is now one of the largest companies in Canton Center, with additional facilities located in West Springfield; Lynchburg, Virginia; Burlington, North Carolina; and Greer, South Carolina. The company currently employs a staff of 55 and is planning to open a new facility in New Jersey this year.
FM Generator engages in disaster recovery work and assisted in the recoveries following Hurricane Katrina and super storm Sandy by delivering hundreds of thousands of gallons of diesel fuel and gasoline to keep generators going. They also assisted New York for almost a full year following the September 11 terrorist attacks.
FM Generator maintains nearly 5,000 generator sets on the East Coast and is considered a primary second responder in disasters. One of their major accomplishments consists of working with a manufacturer to design a custom generator for the telecommunications industry. These generators are installed all over the country at cell sites at a rate of approximately 1,000 units per year with one of the biggest purchasers being Verizon.
The key to providing emergency systems is to constantly monitor them. It is not enough to deliver and install a generator. FM Generator works constantly to ensure that in a time of urgency that generator will work. They call that being in the “ready position.”
FM Generator gives back to the community, and just last November, Molway donated a 60-kilowatt generator to help power an orphanage in Haiti that was founded in honor of Britney Gengel, the Rutland native killed in the 2010 Haitian earthquake. In addition, Molway volunteers at the Mass. Hospital School in Canton as an electrician changing light bulbs and fixing lamps.
FM Generator has also recently teamed up with Briggs and Stratton on residential generators, which are becoming more and more popular now as a means of powering homes during outages caused by snowstorms and other severe weather events.
