By Canton CitizenDavid Grant McLelland, 82, of Canton, passed away peacefully Wednesday evening, July 10.
Beloved husband of 56 years to Claire (Viden) McLelland. Loving father of Lisa McLelland of East Greenwich, RI, and Stephen McLelland and his wife, Gina, of Reading. Cherished grandfather of Taylor and Matthew McLelland.
Born in East Orange, New Jersey, the son of the late James and Katherine (Vose) McLelland, he moved to Portland, Maine, as a young boy. Living in Braintree through his formative years, he moved to Canton 55 years ago.
Mr. McLelland graduated from Thayer Academy and received his degree in mechanical engineering from Wentworth Institute. He retired from the Foxboro Company after 35 years of service as a mechanical engineer and manufacturing manager.
An active citizen of the town of Canton, he served on various boards and commissions, including the Personnel Board and Conservation Commission. He was a dedicated commissioner and board member for the Canton Board of Selectmen from 1985-2010. He was very involved in the youth sports programs, such as Canton Little League and Canton Youth Hockey. He was instrumental in the town of Canton taking ownership of the Metropolis Skating Rink from the MDC and was named Canton’s Citizen of the Year in 2000. He was also a member of the Blue Hill Civic Association and presided as president from 1984-85.
Known for his mechanical aptitude, he enjoyed building, renovating and creating structures and machinery. He liked to stay physically fit and enjoyed hiking, ice hockey, and skiing and was a member of a health club until age 80.
Dave touched the lives of all he knew and never hesitated to help anyone at any time with any need.
He was predeceased by his brother, C. Douglas McLelland.
A memorial service in celebration of David’s life was held Wednesday morning, July 17, in the United Church of Christ in Canton. Expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to the Alzheimer’s Association, 480 Pleasant St., Watertown, MA 02472.
