CHS football coach announces new-look schedule
By Mike BergerFresh off his win as coach of the South team in the Shriners All-Star Classic, CHS head football coach Dave Bohane announced his offseason weightlifting and fitness awards along with the new-look schedule for the upcoming football season.
As a result of a major football realignment that takes effect this year across Massachusetts, Canton will not play any of the large school (Kelly-Rex) teams in the Hockomock League and can enter the Division 4 playoffs by virtue of winning the Davenport Division or by earning a second playoff berth based on record and strength of schedule.
Canton’s schedule after October 25 is undetermined except for a home game against traditional rival Stoughton on Thanksgiving Day. The Bulldogs will also play Stoughton on the road on Friday, October 11.
Canton will open at nonleague Abington on Thursday, September 12, at 6 p.m. and will play its first home game against another nonleague opponent, Quincy, on Friday, September 20. The team will then travel to Sharon on Saturday, September 28, followed by a home game against Milford on Friday, October 4.
After traveling to Stoughton on October 11, the Bulldogs will host Foxboro on October 18 and then play Oliver Ames on the road on October 25.
Thereafter, Canton’s schedule will depend on whether it makes the playoffs. If it is not selected, the Bulldogs will play three Division 4 opponents with dates, times, and teams to be selected by the MIAA.
Based on the team’s competitiveness last year against Davenport Division opponents, Bohane believes the Bulldogs will have as “good a shot as any” in making the playoffs this year. “Our immediate goal is to win the Davenport Division,” he added.
Bohane said he has been very pleased with the number of football players who have consistently come to the weight room between December 15 and July 12. Even on Friday, July 12, there were 28 players who were lifting and running in the intense summer heat. Bohane commended seniors Tommy Glynn, Trevor Ruane, and Frank Powers for their leadership and for urging the younger players to participate.
Bohane said many players tied or set new weightlifting records dating back to when he took over the program in 2011. Powers set a new “hang clean” record at 315 pounds for lifting weights from his knees to his shoulders. Powers also tied a record for a squat at 500 pounds last set by Brandyn Sparks in 2011. Yanni Papadopoulos set a team record for the shuttle run in 4.16 seconds and Tim Gutowski set a new mark for the Bulldog Run (860 yards) in 2:35.
Other players who have impressed Bohane are Mack Brown, Ruane, Sterlin Garvin, Dylan Winchell, and Paul Lindor.
Bohane noted that participation in offseason workouts was the highest it has been in his three years as coach. Also, 75 players, including freshmen, have already registered for the team.
Bohane said equipment will be handed out to seniors on August 12 at 5 p.m., followed by juniors on August 13 at 5 p.m. and freshmen-sophomores on August 14 at 5 p.m. The first day of practice will be held August 19 beginning with an 8:15 a.m. meeting in the CHS locker room.
The team will play three preseason scrimmages: Millis on August 24 at CHS at 11 a.m., Dedham August 27 at CHS at 3:30 p.m., and at Whitman-Hanson August 30 at 6 p.m.
Bohane said he enjoyed coaching the South All Stars in the recent Shriners game, which features the top seniors in eastern Massachusetts and doubles as a fundraiser for the Shriners Hospitals for Children. The South team won 21-7 and recent CHS graduate Dexter Green made a key interception late in the game to foil a rally. Bohane held several practices in June for the all-star team at CHS and invited all Canton players, including those at the middle school, to attend.
